Emerging Actors, Sounding to Find Truth

Adding Sound Effects to “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” has required me to be at rehearsals the past few nights. There is a change in the show . . . a change in the actors every night! The show is taking shape as the actor’s find the truth of their characters . . . each one finding body movements, idiosyncrasies, fears and courage . . . Randy takes the time to uncover and encourage the instincts that are there and to guide them – and, with Lynda and Bruce’s professional background, characters are grounded in reality.

Living with a mental illness, people are haunted daily by emotional ghosts . . . they are truly emerging through the actors on stage now at NYCA. And Peter, as McMurphy comes along like a kid in a candy shop, poking each one of them – until it turns back around to him. Great Job Cast and staff . . . the show is shaping into something truly amazing!

Coffee Talk and Old Friends

At Matt and Miranda's Wedding - Matt was most entertaining on the dance floor - introducing to his new family the fun loving and skilled "Dance Side" of himself - Can we say coffee, anyone? - since Matt ground up quite a bit!

A mini-NYCA reunion also took place . . . Hillary Goldfarb was there and excited to hear we were doing "THE ADVENTURES OF ALADDIN' in May - She told us that when she was at NYCA (for her many, many years) "Aladdin" was "hands-down, the best spring musical ever!" Mike (from Troupe Vegas, the early years) and Jeff (from "Aladdin" back in 2001) were there too - Mike is now a member of the Film & Television Electricians Union and Jeff is an actor!

What a great day! - the beginning of a new family and the celebration of a long line of NYCA Theatre Family members -

Multi-Threat Performers Find Their Way Out of the Box

Yesterday in working with two of my private dance students, we had discussions regarding breathing, centering, alignment and strength - and how they all work for you as a performer . . . the differences and similarities from the dancer to the singer to the actor - which got me thinking -

Most of our students who have been with us for many years have grown accustomed to how the stuff works together in supporting different techniques - techniques that are used by different teachers in building skills in their own discipline. But what has come to be expected is not what is necessarily given anywhere else. NYCA is one of a few places that truly provides for the interrelationships of all the disciplines in the performing arts. Working together, building skills and techniques for the "multi-threat" performer. I am proud to say that the direction that NYCA provides has been most helpful to our students, and the results are evident in all of their achievements. I don't normally take the time to give "props"" to the teaching staff, but today I decided to go outside the box.

Congrats goes out to Marie Elaina for being cast in a Regional Production of Disney's High School Musical - (Hey, you never know - doing the show twice with us can lead to a third . . . love and embrace it, devote to it and finally, get paid for it!)

This past weekend, NYCA proudly presented Troupe '08 - an outstanding performance by everyone - when the audience jumped to its feet at the end of the program Saturday evening. They all knew how much the hard work paid off. A sweet ending to Troupe '08 and a beginning for more great work to come - I'll truly miss this troupe - but I look forward to Troupe '09 and more good times.

Headless Horseman's Excellent Season Has Begun

Doug and I went to the Headless Horseman Saturday evening (they opened last weekend) and I have to say props! to all of them - From parking to exiting the property, everything was handled very smoothly and professionally - The Haunted Houses were better than what we experienced with the NYCA Troupe out in California this summer - It's not just an evening of fright - (although screams and chainsaws echoed through the night air) - but this was an evening of entertainment - I highly recommend you check it out for yourselves!

Headless Horseman Hayrides!

I'm not sure how many of you know of my involvement with the Headless Horesman Hayrides and Haunted Houses in Ulster Park, but this is my 3rd season that I have been working with them as an Acting Coach.

They have an incredible reputation (which began long before I became involved) and I am proud to be associated with them. This place has grown to be the #1 haunted attraction in the U.S. - and every bit worthy of the praise. From the perspective of "theatre" - the make-up, sets, acting, overall mood and atmosphere of the place, it is outstanding and a "Must See." I will even add that there are past and present NYCA Students working there this season - See if you can recognize them!

On September 26th, there is a Autism Awareness Benefit - a really good cause to support. If you go to the Headless Horseman anytime that night, your entry fee goes directly to support Autism Awareness.

So, last night we had PART I of our Dress Rehearsal at Headless Horseman - and this year shows signs of outdoing all others!

So, if you are into theatre at it's scariest - Check it out! - But don't come crying to me if they frightened the little girl out of you - You've been warned - They're good at what they do!

NYCA was a buzz - filled with energy - on Saturday -

Combo Classes with the little ones, my day of classes, Doug teaching Voice - Dave with Guitar and Violin, Neal teaching Piano, and Lisa with the afternoon Ballet Classes - and, to top that off - AUDITIONS!

It was wonderful seeing everyone again and having such good people in our lives.

A reminder. . . . Tuesday Evening 7:30 is the last audition - so be there!

I gave my Saturday Acting class a project this week: To make up their own resume. They each have a lot riding on this project - I'm interested in seeing if anyone falls short of expectations on this one -

It's been a while since I wrote - I think since summer began - mostly because each day was filled with so much activity, I never found myself sitting down at the computer - So, let me re-cap the summer -

Wow! What an Adventure We All Just Experienced

Two major musicals produced and performed at UPAC in one weekend by a single theatre company - NYCA !

Over the past 21 years in this community, NYCA has blazed the way with many firsts - and we are proud to have accomplished yet another one.

What immediately comes to mind is the support, devotion, commitment, love, patience, . . . blood, sweat and tears that went into making this all happen on behalf of the students, parents, friends, businesses in the community and NYCA staff - without it all, it would never have come to pass.

The joy that we brought to 2 huge audiences for High School Musical, memories given to the youth in our community - tears brought to the eyes of many when the kids in the audience sang and danced along with the show . . .

And, knowing that on the other end of the spectrum, we were able to provide theatre Art in our community as well - a sophistication in Musical Theatre that needed to be fostered no matter how difficult it was to get the masses to see it.

NYCA will be known forever as the 1st U.S. Company to have performed 'All 4 One' - and with the many kind words from the composer, a lifetime of memories for all involved . . .

I want to express my sincere gratitude and love to everyone. Congratulations on performances well done and for continuing to set the barre high in our community in providing excellence in performance. This was truly an adventure- one that we all can be proud of!

I want to wish you all a wonderful summer and until we come together once again -

Clash and Flash with No Smash

Amazing . . . That's all I can say after witnessing the sword fighting rehearsal last night.

Like a musical composition itself, the sword fighting choreography that Randy has created starts off as an exhibition of play and humour in the first scene, and then moves into a battle between the King's Musketeers and the Cardinal's Guards.

The flourish of swords, the ringing of metal, the balletic turns and jumps tuned into a symphony of sound and movement sailing over the musical underscore.

Bravo to the Musketeers' and Cardinal's Guards' clashing swords and coming together as one to create a scene worthy of any treasured musketeer movie . . . only this time, they've sliced the screen wide open and jumped out for all of us to see.

Finished the last bit of Fight Choreography last night -

Swordsmen worked in their boots, gloves and overlays - only a few entanglements, but I must say that these fight scenes are beginning to look awesome -

Next week . . . on to the real swords - Up 'till now, there have only been a few cuts & scrapes - let's hope that it remains that way!

Spring Leap Across the . . .

It's been a few days since I've written . . . not because there hasn't been anything to write about - quite a bit has happened!

First - Great job on the Spring Concert - there were a few surprises . . . foreign language songs from Jasmina, Marie Elaina & Paul . . . Elijah and his coffee grinders . . . Nissa singing and playing violin at the same time - Well done to All!

Now, between Friday night's rehearsal - which let's just say was not anything I would want to talk about - and last night's rehearsal, it was like a jump over the Grand Canyon - the difference in knowing your lines makes the process much more creative and enjoyable - now no more excuses for anyone, anywhere - the sooner you are off book, the more time you have to explore and obviously the better you will be - I hope it was a lesson learned. Now I feel like we have a show!

What a fantastic group of people at the recording last night . . .

In 3 hours, we put down 10 tracks!

I am honored to have this group as my cast - a dedicated, professional acting and inspiring community of players that did not utter an ounce of complaint . . . Complaint?! - Why?! This group keeps reminding me of how when you love what you do, it doesn't matter how hard you work or how many hours you put in, because you always feel Great afterward.

I've seen it in the sword fighting and then again last night at the recording - I want to extend props to all of you - and especially David Oakes for his love and passion for what he does that inspires all of us!

What a day yesterday! Costumes, Costumes, Costumes -

Over 100 cast members needed to be fitted for two shows - quite a feat performed by Connie and Diane in one day! . . . and special thanks to Marion, Laura and Leslie H. for their help.

Tonight's the night - why does it seem to rain whenever we go to Nevessa? . . . anyway, big chorus night tonight.

Oh, and in yesterday's sword fighting - the guys were really into it - the Cardinals vs. the Musketeers - quite a show of brandishing their swords!

Too Many Notes - or Too Many Swords?

What's your motivation for all you do?

Does your voice rejoice as a response to fear . . . or, does it simply sound joy?

Choral Rehearsal for 'All 4 One' - got past the "notes" on Monday and started to find the big picture literally - the "filmatic voice" of the music - We forgot the little pictures - the individuals - and started singing as one -

Oh, and by the way . . . professionally speaking, do too many eighth notes really make a piece inappropriate?

Last night's review of all the sword fighting has left me feeling that there is hope -

I think this is pulling together better than expected - Of course, we are still using dowels - but the remaining swords have arrived - ready for battle!

Sunday, we spent many hours working on the Jolly Miller Inn staging - and, with all that goes on in that scene, it becomes an eyeful of men being men, women being women, some women being men - and then there are the times that the men act as women and the women act as men (confused yet?) - "Not I," said the chicken to the road!

If you want to see confusing, step through the doors this Sunday while we have costume fittings - that will make last Sunday's rehearsal seem like a stroll through the park.

Surprise Visit from Frieda Kahlo . . . .

Last night during the Disney's High School Musical Vocal Rehearsal, we were all surprised when we learned that special guest Frieda Kahlo had arrived to meet everyone!

The group was three quarters of the way through rehearsal when her entrance into the room sparked a firestorm of excitement and discussion.

Well done . . . and thank you Frieda for taking the journey and the time to fly in . . .

It was a busy weekend . . .

And, very productive day yesterday -
It began with sword fighting - 5 cardinals against 3 musketeers and D'Artagnan - All at the same time - very busy and scary -

Then meeting with our set building people - Master Crew of Tom, Bob, John, Ed & Bruce -

I got the "piece of cake" thumbs up on set . . . so, we're on a roll.

While this was going on, we were being serenaded by the cast's rehearsal for 'All 4 One' - Sounding Great Everyone!

When People Shout, You Don't Need A Translation!

Loud shouts have a tendency to reach many ears . . .

. . . "a special thank you to everyone at NYCA for giving me the training and amazing experiences that made me the performer I am today," was Ninoshka K. DeLeon Gill's shout out in her bio published for Ithaca College Theatre's prestigious event titled 'DANCE *No Translation Needed'. Echoing back to her is our shout out of pride for her achievement!

The celebrated Boston Conservatory Dance Department is also ringing with a shout . . . because their department also accepted Elise Tarantina as a Dance Major.

Bullies . . . what an inspiration for genius . . .

In 'The Three Musketeers', Jussac, the Cardinal's villain, picks on Lady Bonacieux in the night - D'Artagnan comes to her rescue - the inspiration for the song "D'Artagnan", one of the top songs in the musical 'All 4 One' . . . which the ensemble worked amazingly last night.

Louis may be King, but the NYCA Ensemble rules!

Dance 10 - Looks "Marvelous!"

The Dance Marathon of 10 hours was quite a success - raising quite a bit of money for the troupies - In my opinion, this year's troupe seems to have more energy than past troupes - I think they could have gone on for at least another hour!

12 hours after they all go to sleep, Tommy and Alex had a Sword Fight Rehearsal - which looks great by the way! - 1 completed fight - 3 more to go!

Great rehearsal last night for High School Musical - When Amara was asked to sound American - No Problem! Who knew?!

Troupe Dance Marathon's coming up this Saturday Night - come say hello and dance for a while - 5pm-11pm - (Of course, troupies will dance 'til 3am!)

. . . and during rehearsals we could hear Peter rehearsing with Doug . . . He sounded great - and his doublet looked fierce. Props to 'No Turning Back' - and Major Ferocity!

Singing and Swords

Wow! - I walked into rehearsal last night and was quite impressed with how the songs were coming along for ALL 4 ONE -

Some of the swords came in yesterday which means we are getting closer to production time -

Tommy and Alex are up to choreography with some of the fight scene, and I think they'll admit that it's not as easy as it looks and takes a very strong focus to be good at it - I don't doubt that they'll get it - but for now we'll stick with the dowels until they master their choreography.

I hope tonight's sword group is up for their next battle.

The Voices are Sounding . . . and It's Outta the Park!

Last night - Porthos and Coquenard - the comedy team of Jack and Lynda - or "Jalyndack" - met at the first rehearsal for 'You Are Mine' - a song from A4O . . . and the perfect balance of sincerity, edge and humor emerged . . . it's sure to be a great moment on stage for everyone . . .

Can you believe that April is coming up . . . and the Senior Vocal Recital is right around the corner on the 25th . . . the girls have prepared so well . . . It's hard to believe that they'll be moving on . . . but you know what, - they're ready . . . now!

Props go out from the Voice Studio this week to Jasmina, Paul & Tommy . . . Jasmina for her ever developing bel canto . . . Paul for his song from 'The Magic Flute' . . . and Tommy for his 3 1/2+ octaves. Solid! . . . and, the A4O Group Wednesday did a great job . . . Celebrate!

On another note, the Four Musketeers are beginning to live and breath their roles - They had their full costumes on last night for the first time - including their wigs - oh yes, wigs! - you will have to decide who looks best in long hair - Oh, and before you comment - you might want to find out what we'll be doing to your hair to go period correct - you know the saying "People with Bad Hair Days . . ."

Two New Members of the NYCA Family . . .

. . . and they each have a beautiful set of 88 teeth!

No - they're not a pair of bottlenose dolphin calves - they're two new pianos for our studios!

The piano studio now has a gorgeous Yamaha with the sound of a nice concert piano - perfect for inspiring the piano student to love music and enjoy playing. The voice studio has a nice Kimball, really pulling the studio together and providing a great working piano for voice lessons and rehearsals.

Really Good rehearsal for Disney's High School Musical yesterday - we were missing quite a few people, but we managed to clean up the lunch room. I'm sure we'll have to do it again when those messy people join us at the next rehearsal.

Sword Fighting! - Well, what can I say . . . It's probably a good thing we're working with dowels presently - I think everyone is realizing although fun - this is not as easy as they thought it would be - putting maneuvers together and getting some speed is a lot more challenging than just doing drills. DUCK! - What? - Where? - When? - Why? (So that you don't lose your head!) . . . Swipe!

It's Spring Break . . . which means . . . our rehearsals this week will be great without all the pressures of school work - YEAH!

On another note - I wanted to take the time to start to spread the word with your help!

BAND CAMP - Our newest full day Summer Program - ages 11-14 - dates are June 30 - July 11.

Tell your friends, etc. It's a fun way to spend some Summer weeks with music. All of the cast members in the Musical Theatre and Band Division will spend their Swim and Lunch time together - so if you are in the Musical Theatre Division and have a friend who isn't an actor, but plays an instrument - it'll be cool to share this time together!

'CATS' DVDs Show An Extraordinary Team!

We just received the DVD of 'CATS' last night, and Doug & I sat down to watch it . . . and, my sincere congratulations on a superior job go out to everyone who worked on it - Dave, Laura, Kayla, Marley and Sabrina. When you watch it, you'll forget that this DVD was put together by just a few hands - truly professional.

And by the way . . . Wow! and Congratulations goes out to all of the 'CATS' cast and crew - what an outstanding performance! It reminds all of us that when a team pulls together and sets their goal high, they can achieve anything.

'CATS' was a challenging production, but we did it! And, we can do more . . . Many people think we are a bit crazy trying to produce 2 shows in one weekend this year, but I say bring it on! With the NYCA Group - it'll be sheer magic!

Who Will Be the Next Great Sword Fighter? . . .

The turn out at sword fighting rehearsal has been great! - There are more people learning than I'll probably need. Not a bad place to be!

How do I decide? Will it be the weakest link? Put everyone up for a vote? Create a duel off? What do you think? Of course, we want to be fair - but I expect that any suggestions you give will be creative - after all, theatre people are creative. I welcome your input.

A shout out to Jack, Peter, Tom and Tommy on a good vocal rehearsal last night!

On another note, in Disney's High School Musical - is Jack Scott really shy, or does he just use that to get to Kelsi? - and . . . what's his "Neilsen Rating"?

Rainy Days & 'Sun Kings' Always Get Me Down - Not!

Even though rain poured down all day yesterday, there was a nice bit of sunshine in the NYCA world –

Our second group rehearsal for ‘All 4 One’ was quite successful. The rich harmonies created by John Trent Wallace, the composer, began to emerge and ring out during the song ‘Two Heads of State’ - a song which sets an argument on the streets reflecting the political climate during Louis XIV’s reign.

The composer of ‘All 4 One’ shared with me in his email this week: “When setting out to write ‘All 4 One’, we wanted to create a theatrical piece that could be told simply yet effectively. The music was to be almost "filmatic" in its ability to capture the moment and lift the emotional experience for both audience and actor . . . making the show a powerful experience for an actor who could sing, rather than a singer who could act. This subtle yet crucial vision, helped to shape both story/dialogue and the songs.”

And . . . One of my students came into a voice lesson singing ‘All for One’ – the song from ‘High School Musical 2’ - and it is coincidentally quite fun to know there is a powerful connection in the world between our performances of ‘Disney’s High School Musical’ and ‘All 4 One’. The students who perform in as well as those who will attend both productions will see where the phrase "All for One" really comes from.

Little things like that make musical performance and study a fun & enlightening experience for all of us . . . All for One, and One for All!

NYCA Staff Member Meets 'Batboy'

If you have some time this weekend, today (Saturday) at 2pm & 8 pm or tomorrow (Sunday) at 2pm - check out 'Batboy' at Marist College!

This show - produced entirely by students at a school that doesn't have Theatre as a major, was quite good. Excellent energy and focus!

Joanna Stein (NYCA's Ballet Instructor) choreographed the show - An outstanding job! - quick paced, edgy - and she made a cast of predominantly non-dancers look like dancers embodying their characters.

*The show may not be for everyone; so, google 'Batboy the musical' and get informed on content - so you're not surprised. (not for young children.)

Marie Elaina has been accepted into the Vocal Performance Program of The College of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University and Elise has been accepted as a Dance Major in the Theatre & Dance Department of Montclair University.

Two Different Duels . . . Everyone is Still in One Piece

Yesterday afternoon, the Basketball Team for 'Disney's High School Musical' learned more maneuvers and is off to a good start - only a few balls got away from them, but practice makes perfect and getting their head in the game will 'win them the Championship!'

. . . .and last night was our 3rd session of Sword Fight Rehearsal for ALL 4 One! We spent the 1st 2 rehearsals with foot work and defensive moves, but last night - the Attack! . . . . and, I'm happy to report that everyone is still alive - ready and eager for more! En Garde!

Isn't it interesting - the difference of how rivals of the 1600's and those of today settle who is better . . . Which way do you prefer?

Three thoughts for the day:

1st - If you have not been here before, "Welcome!" On a regular basis either myself or Doug will share updated information of happenings at NYCA - with students and just random inspired and not so inspired thought.

2nd - We had our first read thru of ALL 4 ONE last night. Of course, I'm excited about the show, but I have to admit that we have some work to do on the accents. It sounded very much like what a Picasso painting would look like. (We'll work on it!)

3rd - My third and last note for today is . . . After much prodding we are going to post the HS Musical / ALL 4 ONE rehearsal schedule on our website. Coming to a theatre near you...

We've just learned from Jaime Gruber, former student and current professional make-up artist, that the Zombie film she worked on is being released at select movie theatres in major cities across the U.S. in the near future.

Her most recent work with NYCA was on cat faces for our cat chorus and audience members at "Cats", and on the magnificent job that she did with The Beast in "Disney's Beauty and the Beast."

Last evening, I watched the biography of Pete Seeger entitled "Pete Seeger: The Power of Song" on PBS, primarily because some time ago students from NYCA recorded the song "Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore" to be used as background music in the piece. So, of course being all proud of this, I sat down and watched "listened" for it. And yes, it was there - but more than that, how proud I was to have the honor of being a part of this wonderful biography and I hope that anyone reading this can take the time to catch this piece on PBS (Channel 13 New York.) It will air again as as part of the American Masters Series, March 6th at 8pm. If you don't know Pete Seeger's history, this is a must see. He is a truly remarkable and inspirational man and whether or not you know it, he had an impact on all of our lives through his music and great gift of humanity! You'll be glad you did!

Conservatory Holds Essay Contest

- Dateline: Hurley, NY February 27, 2008 -

The New York Conservatory for the Arts of Hurley, NY is holding an Essay Contest for Young Instrumentalists throughout Ulster and the surrounding counties during the month of March to join our educational system in building a solid music foundation for the youth of our community.

Forms are available to print up at www.NYCA.org and essays are to be submitted postmarked by April 5, 2008. The first and second place winners chosen will receive free summer instrumental private lessons at the Conservatory's instrumental division.

"After many years of offering inspiration to young artists in the world of music theatre and dance and with the addition of 6 seasoned instrumental teachers at the Conservatory, we hope to add a new generation of inspiration to young instrumentalists in our community," states Randy Conti, Conservatory Director.
